Sant'Alvise (St. Louis of Toulouse)

15th century
Chiesa di Sant'Alvise (Church of St. Louis of Toulouse)

As usual Louis of Toulouse is portrayed wearing sumptuous pontificals. The crown at his feet is a traditional way of showing a saint has rejected a kingship. In Louis's case, it was the crown of Naples that he renounced in order to enter the clergy (Butler, III, 358). The other images of this saint that I have seen did not include this symbol.

In the altar beneath this statue are what are said to be relics of the saint. Other sources report that his body rests in Valencia.
